To provide better competition for their athletes, Dorchester AC joined with Wimborne AC and Poole AC to enter the Southern Mens and Womens leagues. This new partnership then entered the McCain Young Athletes League. Weymouth St. Paul's Harriers & AC was the fourth club to join Team Dorset. The success of this venture can be measured by the team's rapid rise to the Southern Premiership Division of the McCain Young Athletes League.

With the mechanism in place to provide higher standards of competition, the four clubs now intend to build on this platform by greater integration of their coaching resources and by building on participatory opportunities in both urban and rural areas. The next step was to secure funding for such an initiative and, thanks to the sponsorship of McCain, Team Dorset has received financial support for its first year of development into the Team Dorset Athletics Network.

The Team Dorset Athletics Network will be developing three interlinked programmes to improve levels of coaching, increase participation and to sustain participation.
